POINT PLEASANT – Welding students at the Mason County Career Center (MCCC) took care of projects.

Welding instructor Brent Hereford shared with his students the completion of two projects, one being the refurbishment of the gymnasium bleachers at Point Pleasant Junior / Senior High School (PPJ / SHS) and the other being the collection of Skills USA Christmas Ornament Fund.

Students from four different classes, including welding, drawing, machine cutting and commerce, all worked together on the bleacher renovations. Brandy Barkey Sweeney, MCCC, commented that they have redone the wood and supports on the stands.

Although the students worked hard with the bleachers, there was still time to work on their holiday fundraising, making steel Christmas decorations. The adornments were available in several forms, including a knight mascot, a hawk mascot, a wildcat mascot, a helmet (optional player number added), a West Virginia emblem, an Ohio emblem, Mickey Mouse ears (optional initials added), Minnie Mouse ears (optional initials added), Santa hat (optional name added), round deer and solid round ornament (optional initial added). Additionally, buyers could choose from four different font options as well as four different finishes including polished steel, black, blue, and red.

Hereford explained that to begin the process of creating ornaments, the students first designed the ornaments on AutoCAD and then cut the ornaments on the plasma camera. Almost all of the ornaments were cut out by the students in the welding and drawing classes.

Sweeney commented that nearly 400 ornaments were sold for this fundraiser.

Awaiting student plans, Hereford said his students, as well as drawing students, are starting a project through the Robert and Louise Claflin Foundation to redevelop the pigsty at Mason County Fairgrounds. Students will install 130 new pins.

Hereford commented that his students are very involved in these big projects and learn valuable skills that they can take with them in their field of work after graduation.

Additionally, for Valentine’s Day, the students will be doing another holiday fundraiser for the welding program. They will make 18 inch monogram letters, which are perfect as door decorations.
